Have A Look At DatWAV’s First Annual 2018 Producer Freshman List

Rap music is generally focused on the “rappers”. The rappers wouldn’t be able to create the WAVs they do without the great production that helps lead them there. It’s a lot like enjoying a fine meal without caring how or why the chef made the meal. We are not saying producers are the chefs and rappers are the meals. They both equally support the fine meal, or the song in this instance. This is our “Freshman List” or as we like to call it, The WAVMakers.

BigHeadOnTheBeat, or just BigHead for short, is the Lancaster, CA based producer behind Lil Pump’s smash hit Gucci Gang. The track was released August of ‘17 and had massive success peaking at number 3 on Billboards Hot 100. Gucci Gang was certified 2x Platinum and the music video on YouTube currently has north of 650 million views. We don’t want to forget to mention the Co-Producer on the track GNealz, who is a childhood friend of BigHead. We want to see more solo success from him as well. BigHead has been traveling and touring as Pump’s DJ and has done a lot of personal work with artists like Lil Tracy and the late Lil Peep. BigHead said he’s happy about the success of Pump’s single but he doesn’t want to stop there. He wants 10 Top 10 Billboard songs.

NonStop Da Hitman has been flying under the radar for some time with placements here and there. NonStop produced Rick Ross’s Same Hoes and Yo Gotti’s Errrbody but it wasn’t until recently the name of this producer was getting the recognition it deserves. NonStop is a member of the prestigious production crew 808 Mafia which is lead by multi platinum producer Southside. This year has been his biggest one yet with a placement on two different platinum albums. He produced Cardi B’s Migo assisted track Drip which is a fan favorite right now. He also produced Made Men on Migos Culture 2 album. NonStop has hinted about some even bigger placements dropping by the end of the year.

2017 was a humongous year for Columbia, SC born producer Pi’erre Bourne. If his name doesn’t sound familiar, surely his famous tag does, “Yo Pi’erre you wanna come out here?”. Early ‘17 started picking up the pace for the young Producer with smaller placements from Jay Critch, Young Nudy, G Herbo, and more. Then June of ‘17 hit and Pi’erre’s tag would be heard by millions on Playboi Carti’s smash hit Magnolia. The song peaked at #29 on Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 2x Platinum with over 2,000,000 certified unit sales. That was the single for Playboi Carti’s self titled album. That album also had a Lil Uzi featured song that was produced by Pi’erre Bourne, wokeuplikethis. Pi’erre then went on to work with a lot of artists such as Lil Yachty, Gunna, 21 Savage, XXXTentacion, Lil Uzi Vert, Big Sean, and more. Pi’erre Bourne had differences with artist Tekashi 6ix9ine but the two created another massively successful song, Gummo. The song peaked at #12 on Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified Platinum. The wildly viral music video for the song currently has over 180 million views on YouTube. Pi’erre Bourne has had a good start to 2018 being featured on Lil Yachty’s Lil Boat 2 and Famous Dex’s Dex Meets Dexter.

He’s produced for artists such as Chris Brown, Migos, Tory Lanez, YFN Lucci and more. Chris Brown’s Pills and Automobiles featuring Kodak Black, A Boogie, and Yo Gotti was certified Platinum in the first week of 2018. Not a bad way to start off the year. OG Parker went Platinum last year with Migos and Gucci Mane’s track Slippery and then again with Migos this year with the Drake featured song Walk It Talk It On Culture 2. The single peaked at #10 on Billboards Hot 100. The music video was hilariously viral and has recorded 100 million views on YouTube in the first month alone. From getting placements as a teenager to currently having a song on YouTube with 60 million views on it, the Louisburg, NC producer Joseph Davinci surely has a future in front of him. His social media presence has certainly helped build a fan base. Due to his comedic outlook on things, a few of his non music related posts have gone viral and drawn more fans to his brand. As a teenager, Davinci had placements with Soulja Boy and Chief Keef. He got more recognition a few years later when he produced Cleveland, Ohio rapper Lil Cray’s smash song Kyrie Irving. BigHeadOnTheBeat co-produced that with him. The music video has over a million views. Joseph worked independently making his name on SoundCloud and other social media sites. He eventually landed his biggest placement late last year when Lil Baby rapped over his beat and titled the song Freestyle. That song has garnered millions of views not because of Lil Baby’s bars (as good as they are), but because of Joseph Davinci’s infectious production on that song. The instrumental has been searched to the point where people are making fraud remakes. Being on every major playlist, that song is close to Billboards Hot 100. Expect to see Joseph Davinci on Lil Baby’s new album dropping.

Memphis trap music has a new face and his name is Tay Keith. Working with Memphis rappers like Blac Youngsta, Yo Gotti, Moneybagg Yo, and Key Glock, his production is uniting a city of rap music. His childhood friend and frequent collaborator BlocBoy JB, just sent Tay Keith’s and his name straight to the Billboard Top 10 and have stayed there for 4 weeks now. The song that got them there was the Drake featured song Look Alive. Peaking at #5 on the charts, the music video views continue to grow. Right now the video has 131 million views and doesn’t look like it’s slowing down. Must be the easily imitated dance that BlocBoy has everyone doing. Tay Keith is the perfect production for that dance too. As that song continues to grow, Tay Keith and BlocBoy have another hit that has just begun. Rover 2.0 featuring 21 Savage has 22 million views in less than a month and is on every major playlist as well. Get ready to hear way more from Tay Keith.

21 year old Sosa 808 is a promising producer from Cleveland, Ohio. As young as he is, he already has tracks with some of the biggest names out. Sosa’s credits include Fetty Wap, Lil Durk, Key Glock, and UnoTheActivist. His biggest song, which is continually growing, was Famous Dex’s biggest song to date, Pick It Up featuring A$AP Rocky. This was the major single from Dex’s debut album Dex Meets Dexter. The single went Gold selling over 500,000 certified units. Youtube has recorded over 25 million views for the music video and the song appears on every major playlist. The beat has a nice switch up to it which changes the energy of the song. It’s not something you hear everyday. The production is different and that’s what makes Sosa 808 such an exciting producer to see grow.

With a very limited social media presence, it’s almost more impressive to see how much success K Swisha has had. He’s a multi platinum producer that barely has an Instagram. He is best known for his MadeInTYO assisted tracks, although he’s had a few successful tracks with other artists as well. Uber Everywhere went 2x Platinum and was the song that got K’s name off the ground in a major way. After that, MadeInTYO invited Big Sean on their smash hit Skateboard P, which is an ode to Pharrell Williams. Hearing a superstar like Big Sean on K Swisha’s production really showed he belongs with the best. That song went Platinum and has almost 10 million views on YouTube. K Swisha also had production on 2Chainz’s Pretty Girls Like Trap Music which was certified Gold. He remains kind of a mystery so we’ll see what he pops up producing in the future. We know a future is for certain for K Swisha.

Those names include Migos, Young Thug, Ski Mask The Slump God, Lil Skies, Chief Keef, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, iLoveMakonnen, G Herbo, and many more. Speaking to the streets through music and not lyrics is a tough thing to translate. DJ Swift does it flawlessly. Mostly known for his production for Youngboy NBA, he has hits with several artists. Kodak Black has two Certified Gold records with Swift, Painting Pictures and There He Go. He also has production with Lil Wayne, Moneybagg Yo, Cuban Doll, OJ Da Juiceman, and more. Youngboy dropped a collaborative mixtape with Moneybagg Yo and DJ Swift helped produced most of that mixtape. We know NBA isn’t going anywhere soon so we expect to hear more from Swift. Their newest song together titled Diamond Teeth Samurai has a nostalgic feel to it. It represents the Cash Money/Hot Boy era in the sounds and lyrics of the song. The track debuted at #59 on Billboard Hot 100 and is the second single off of Youngboy’s anticipated album Until Death Call My Name. Two other songs on the album he produced are called Preach and Worth It. The album will be released late April.

From Lil Yachty and Lil Skies to French Montana and G Herbo, Maaly Raw has worked with them all. Although, nobody gets more production from Maaly Raw than his hometown rappers from Philly. He has tracks with Meek Mill but he’s much more known for his music relationship with rap rockstar Lil Uzi Vert. Producing some of his well known songs like Do What I Want and Money Longer people are familiar with his sound. He produced a few songs on Lil Uzi Vert’s album Luv Is Rage 2. He produced Dark Queen, 444+222, Early 20 Rager, UnFazed, and more. The album peaked at #1 on Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum with over a million certified unit sales. Music videos using Maaly Raw’s production are well into the hundred millions of views on YouTube. Meek Mill’s Wins And Losses album was just certified Gold and Raw produced Ballplayers on that album. This multi-platinum producer obviously has a huge future.
