Protests started to erupt in Wisconsin overnight after a video went viral of an African American man being shot in the back multiple times by Kenosha, Wisconsin police. Jacob Blake was walking to his SUV on Sunday with two Kenosha officers following behind him when he was reportedly shot seven times. Inside the SUV were Blake’s three children of ages 3, 5, and 8; who watched as their father was gunned down by police.
Jacobs would be airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital in serious condition from his gunshot wounds. Governor Tony Evers would take to Twitter to state, “While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country. We stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites.”
The incident would occur after officers responded to a domestic issue that Sunday night. Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. A statement also revealed that the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation has started an investigation into the shooting and will seek to “provide a report of the incident to the prosecutor within 30 days.”
The Wisconsin National Guard has been called to the city of Kenosha after protest started following the incident.
